Science Operations Leader

The Science Operations Leader will oversee the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Bioscience and Chemistry teams within the Oncology Targeted Discovery department. This role is responsible for ensuring that the site runs smoothly while supporting the scientific teams in achieving their research goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Scientific operational Leadership and Coordination:

  • Liaise with the Lab Operations department to ensure seamless laboratory operations, including management of analytical instrumentation and specialized scientific equipment.

  • Orchestrate resource allocation and manage logistical demands associated with the transition from Waltham to Kendall Square, ensuring continuity of ongoing experiments and research projects

  • Ensure reliable communication and representation, providing decision-making support.

  • Conduct comprehensive onboarding for new scientific personnel, including laboratory safety protocols, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory technicians.

  • Perform systematic analysis to identify areas for process optimization and cost-efficiency in scientific operations, presenting evidence-based recommendations to senior management and key stakeholders

  • Site Representation and Scientific Management:

  • Serve as the primary scientific operations liaison for the Waltham site, transitioning to Kendall Square, ensuring seamless integration of research activities.

  • Develop and foster a culture of community and scientific excellence through effective department communications, simplificationprojects and driving research efficiencies.

  • Act as sustainability champion, interfacing with MyGreenLabs and other sustainability groups to implement eco-friendly laboratory practices and reduce environmental impact of scientific operations.

  • Support local Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) initiatives across Chemistry and Bioscience departments, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices in laboratory safety

  • Local Leadership Team Facilitation:

  • Organize and facilitate regular local leadership & science team meetings, ensuring that agendas are clear and focused on strategic priorities.

  • Develop and distribute meeting content and materials, fostering effective communication and engagement among team members.

  • Follow up on action items and decisions made during meetings to ensure timely and successful implementation.

  • Financial Management:

  • Oversee department budgets, focusing on external spend and consumables.

  • Track and confirm scope for spend requests, ensuring alignment with financial goals.

  • Scientific Project Management and Strategic Initiatives:

  • Plan and deliver operational meetings to maintain alignment on strategic objectives.

  • Lead operational simplification and efficiency improvements of relevancy for the departments

  • Lead ad hoc projects, including productivity reviews and continuing professional development frameworks.

RequiredQualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field; an advanced degree is a plus

  • BS degree with 5+ years of experience or

  • MS degree and 3+ years of experience.

  • Extensive experience in operations management within a scientific or research-oriented environment.

  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage cross-functional teams.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.

  • Experience with budget management and financial oversight.

  • Familiarity with laboratory operations and safety standards.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in the biopharmaceutical or chemistry research environment.

  • Strong project management skills and experience with large-scale relocations or transitions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic and fast-paced team environment.

  • Proficiency with financial software and project management tools.
